Stone Island Sizing Guide: Does Stone Island Run Small?

Quick answer: modern Stone Island (roughly 2015 onwards) fits true to size with a slightly slim, Italian cut. Knitwear runs smaller, so size up if you are between sizes. Older pieces from the 90s and 2000s often run a size larger than the label. The safest way to choose is to compare flat measurements with a jacket you already own.

Sizing is the question we get most, on WhatsApp, on Instagram and in person. It makes sense. Stone Island has changed its cut several times over four decades, a Medium from 2004 is not a Medium from 2024, and when you buy second hand you cannot walk into a store and try it on.

This guide explains how Stone Island fits per era and per category, how to measure a garment you already own, and how to use the measurements we list on every item.

Does Stone Island run small?

Mostly no, but it depends on when the piece was made.

  • Recent seasons (about 2015 to now): true to size with a clean, slightly slim fit through the body and sleeves. If you wear a Medium in most European brands, a Medium usually works.
  • 2000s pieces: roomier and boxier. Many people size down one for this era.
  • 90s and early archive: generous and long, cut for layering. A label size L from this period can wear like a modern XL.

You can date a piece from the first two digits of its ART number. Our guide on how to read a Stone Island ART number shows you how.

Stone Island sizing per category

Category How it fits Our advice
Jackets and overshirts True to size, room for a hoodie on most models Your normal size. Size up only for heavy layering
Down jackets and parkas True to size, the filling takes up some room Normal size, or one up if you wear a thick knit underneath
Knitwear Slim and a bit short in the body Size up if you are between sizes
Sweatshirts and hoodies Regular fit, ribbed cuffs and hem Your normal size
T-shirts and polos Regular, slightly boxy on newer seasons Your normal size
Cargo pants and trousers Sized by waist (W30, W32, W34). Skinny and slim fits are narrow in the leg Check the fit name on the label and compare the waist measurement
Bodywarmers Close to the body Your normal size, one up to wear over a jacket or thick knit

Garment dyed pieces are dyed after they are sewn, so they are pre shrunk. They will not shrink much more if you follow the care label. See how to wash Stone Island for the details.

Stone Island size conversion

Stone Island labels use letter sizes (S, M, L, XL and up), based on Italian sizing. Retailer conversion charts differ by a size here and there, but this is the common range for menswear tops:

Stone Island Italian (IT), most common
S 46
M 48
L 50
XL 52
XXL 54
XXXL 56

Treat this as a starting point. A conversion chart tells you roughly where you are, but only garment measurements tell you how one specific piece will fit.

How to measure a jacket you already own

Take the Stone Island or C.P. Company piece that fits you best, or any jacket in a similar style, and lay it flat on a table. Zip or button it closed.

  1. Pit to pit: measure straight across the front from one armpit seam to the other. This is the most important number.
  2. Length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar, down to the bottom hem.
  3. For trousers: measure the waistband straight across and double it, then measure the inside leg from the crotch seam to the hem.

Within 1 to 2 cm of your own jacket means it will fit the same. More than 3 cm pit to pit is a noticeable difference.

How we list sizes at Gorilla Island

Every item we list is measured by hand. Tops and jackets get pit to pit and length, trousers get waist and length. You see the label size as a badge on the product photo and the real measurements in the description. When a piece fits differently from its label, which happens a lot with archive, we say so.

Not sure between two sizes? Send us your own measurements on WhatsApp or Instagram and we will compare them with the piece for you.

FAQ

Is Stone Island true to size?

Modern Stone Island is true to size with a slightly slim fit. Knitwear runs small and older pieces run large.

Should I size up in Stone Island?

Size up for knitwear, for down jackets you want to layer under, or if you prefer a relaxed fit. For most jackets, sweatshirts and tees, stay with your normal size.

Does C.P. Company fit the same as Stone Island?

They are close but not identical, and both vary per model. Compare the measurements of the exact piece. Read more in Stone Island vs C.P. Company.

Do Stone Island clothes shrink?

Garment dyed pieces are already shrunk during dyeing. Washed cold and dried flat or on a hanger, they keep their size. Tumble drying is the main cause of shrinking.
